Empowering underprivileged children in Nigeria
In 2022, we proudly partnered with Chess in Slums, Africa (CISA) to organise a Children's Day celebration that had a remarkable impact on the lives of 150 youngsters. This year, we are excited to share the continuation of this initiative and sum up the event.
On May 27, the Glover Memorial Hall in Lagos hosted children from marginalised communities and three public schools. Their ages ranged from 5 to 18, representing a diverse group of youngsters eager to interact, feel included, and enhance their skills through chess.
The event's highlight was a chess tournament featuring junior and senior categories. The contest encouraged friendly competition and provided a platform to award scholarships and establish the Chess for Education Idea. Children displayed their strategic skills in rapid games lasting around 15–20 minutes, and we presented awards for the first to third winners in the Best Female Player and Most Brilliant Players categories. Moreover, we rewarded the three most exceptional young mathematicians for their outstanding numerical skills in mental math challenge.
Throughout the event, we were pleased to provide refreshments and delectable treats generously contributed by child-friendly brands. At Octa, we remain committed to nurturing and uplifting every young mind and look forward to continuing this meaningful journey.
